Knowing the basic elements and rules of the English language can pave way for better command of the English language. Articles are important elements in phrases and sentences and they happen to be the most difficult words for English as a Second Language students to master because even native English speakers don’t know how to explain about articles properly.

Majority of English language speakers have constantly used articles and most have used them properly. Most of the time English speakers do not even think of using articles in their own grammar and most instinctively use a, an, and the in their sentences almost accurately.

Native English language speakers can intuit on when are the suitable times to use each article in their own writing and speech, while ESL students do not have the number of years of hearing English spoken that is necessary to develop that perception for grammar. The issue for English language learners is the fact that most native English speakers do not know how to explain article with more profundity.

Articles are some of the most frequently used words in the English language and are composed of “the” “a”, and “an”. Articles are generally used with common nouns to demonstrate whether they are specific or general. “A” and “an” are called the indefinite articles and are employed with nonspecific nouns. “The” is the definite article and is made use of with specific common nouns. However, bear in mind that there are some common nouns that do not need an article at all and there are some proper nouns that do need the use of articles.

The following are a few article tips to bear in mind for native English speakers and English language learners:

* Articles with common nouns. The usage of articles with common nouns depend not only specificity but also on whether the nouns are singular, plural, countable, or uncountable.

Common nouns that are general and plural never use articles. ex. Dogs bark.

Common nouns that are general and are singular or countable use indefinite articles. ex. A dog barked at the child.

A definite article is used any time a common noun refers to a specific entity ex. The dog barked at the child.

Articles with proper nouns. A lot of proper nouns do not have need of any articles however there are some kinds of proper nouns that do need articles and according to the Thomson Handbook, these proper nouns include historical events. Time periods, physical structures, and bodies of water and they all need the definite article “the”.
ex. The biggest ocean in the world is the Pacific.

Articles are important elements that should not be taken for granted by English language learners. Everyone learning English should always bear articles in mind.

<img src="http://i30.tinypic.com/2qjk8j8.jpg" alt="Finding Subjects and Verbs" title="Finding Subjects and Verbs" / style="float:left;margin:3px"/>English grammar is a set of rules that helps us to make use of the language better. The first step while learning English is to learn the grammar and to master it. English is a language spoken in many parts of the world and becoming truly fluent in it as a second language speaker is a challenge.

One of the most common errors in English grammar is the agreement of subjects and verbs in sentences. It is essential for English language learners to identify and find subjects and verbs in order to know how to make them agree. Being able to find the right subject and verb will help language learners to correct errors of agreement.

First let us define what is a subject and a verb:

    * A subject is the noun or pronoun that performs the verb
* A verb is a word that shows action or state of being

Being able to identify the subject and the verb correctly will also help learners with using punctuations such as commas and semicolons.

The following are some rules in finding the subject and verb:

1. If a verb follows to, it is called an infinitive phrase and is not the main verb. You will find the main verb either before or after the infinitive phrase.

Ex. I like to run.

The efforts to get him elected succeeded.

2. A subject will come before a phrase beginning with of.

Ex. A bouquet of pink flowers will lend color and fragrance to the room.

3. To find the subject and verb, always find the verb first. In order to find the subject, ask who or what performed the verb.

Ex. The jet engine passed inspection.

Passed is the verb. Who or what passed? The engine, so engine is the subject. Technically, jet is an adjective here and is part of what is known as the complete subject.

4. Any request or command has the understood subject you because if we ask who is to do the command, the answer must be you.

Ex. Please bring my notebook.

Bring is the verb. Who is to bring? The answer is you.

5. Sentences often have more than subject, more than one verb, or pairs of subjects and verbs.

Ex. I like cake and she likes ice cream.

(Two pairs of subjects and verbs)

She and I like cake.

(Two subjects and one verb)

He lifts weights and jogs daily.

(One subject and two verbs)

Knowing how to identify the subject and verb or a sentence matters a lot that is why if you are on your way to becoming fluent in English, better brush up your skills in identifying them!

Find a pen pal whose native language is English. A pen pal you can write to with snail mail, or email in English is elemental in improving your language skills. Interacting with a person makes a huge difference in improving your English grammar that is why it is helpful to find a native English speaker to be your pen pal. You will be able to learn conversational English from your pen pal and may have some tips in grammar and vocabulary. You may also try language exchange, you learn English while your pen pal learns your native tongue; that would be very beneficial to reciprocate each other’s language learning needs.

Study your native language’s grammar. Studying your own native language’s grammar will help you to understand English grammar better. The grammar rules in your language may not be exactly the same as English language grammar rules but having the ability to understand how grammar works in your language can help in understanding grammar in any language. It will be easier to become familiar with grammatical concepts in your native language then applying them to English rather than becoming shocked with everything about grammar at once.

Ask questions. If you already have a pen pal, ask questions about things you don’t know but then don’t overdo it. You can also try asking grammar questions in English forums on the internet and interact with English speakers and enthusiasts who are willing to share their knowledge about the language.

Read. Reading works of literature in English especially fiction will help you a lot in getting your brain to think in English. Reading will help you to learn grammar inductively and reading fiction will allow you to follow the flow of a story and keep your English learning journey interesting.

Learn Diagramming Sentences. After having a fair grasp on English vocabulary, learning how to diagram sentences can be beneficial in learning English grammar. Sentence diagrams show the relationships between English words by using a diagram. This exercise makes it easier to learn, understand and retain grammatical concepts.

Learning English is fun and honing your English grammar skills is even better! Learn more as you apply these tips into your language learning experience.

<img src="http://i74.servimg.com/u/f74/11/74/66/71/writin10.jpg" alt="Writing Good English" title="Writing Good English" / style="float:left;margin:3px"/>To be able to write good English is essential for a lot of reasons. If we cannot fully deliver in words whatever we wish to say, we write it down. If we cannot voice out our feelings in the simplest way, we write it down just the same. And whether you believe it or not, words and feelings are best expressed when written. It’s because when we write we have more time and space to think thoroughly, than when we speak. The only odd circumstance of speaking is that sometimes it does not permit us to withdraw what we have said. As far as the organization of thoughts or ideas is concerned, writing is better than speaking. And since it is so, you might as well write the best way you can to be understood completely. I have researched some important concepts when writing, they should guide you better.

Clear organization. This concerns the idea/information you are trying to communicate. Write in a continuous flow that your readers can follow. Your introduction should provide the general/main idea. Your body will form the detailed development. And your conclusion should give the neutral assessment, if not your personal evaluation or critical thinking on the subject of matter.

Correct Grammar. Writing and Speaking are relatively the same. Picture someone speaking confidently in front of a crowd yet verbalizing the wrong pronunciations, some audience are quick to pick that up and may find the player a laughing stock. This is just the same with writing. You may have great ideas to share, but if you can’t speak the correct words on paper, some readers may judge you down easily, and conclude that you can’t be that good as far as the grammatical errors of your story show.

Use simple words. Some people think that using complex words may give the ‘impression’. On top of conveying the relevant issue of what they have to say, they also want to display how far they’ve gone across the knowledge sphere. The majority of people in this planet have average minds. We all think normal, on the positive side. Even bright ones are only slightly disparate. So write in order to be understood. Your readers make the call anyway. If their opinions turn you down, it doesn’t hurt not knowing you are ignored, otherwise they’ll tell you so and you take it as constructive criticism. Learn from it.

There are actually countless tips on writing good English. I have shared here the basic concepts not centered on correct grammar and vocabulary, but writing good English to communicate. English is more than just a language to study and learn, it is a medium to connect.

<img src="http://i44.servimg.com/u/f44/11/74/66/71/books10.jpg" alt="Put Your Interest in the Line" title="Put Your Interest in the Line" / style="float:left;margin:3px"/>Learning the English language is considered highly important as it is highly beneficial. Anywhere you are in this world if you know the English language you will never get lost. It is universal as it is valuable. A few points to know if you are just starting out to learn, is to start with the basics. After all, FUNDAMENTALS ARE THE BUILDING BLOCKS OF LIFE. This holds true anyway you put it.

A) READ – Read books. It is imperative that you READ. It don’t have to be books, it can be magazines, newspapers, articles and the like. Whatever medium that you use it doesn’t as long as it uses ENGLISH. Do not be disappointed if you can’t understand what you’re reading, for a starter that is expected of you. So just read on. Read straight. Even if it’s hard to comprehend the idea, nature has a way of putting it in your head, anyway. It’s true, you will see.

B) LISTEN – Listen to how others speak. Listen to people who can speak the tongue freely. And just like reading, you don’t have to understand as you listen, just listen good. Learning the basics means getting yourself used to the substance that you want to incorporate in your knowledge, it doesn’t mean eating it already.

C) WATCH TV – There is one surest way to absorbing what we are trying to learn, and that is putting our interest in the line. Have you thought about it? It does not matter what you watch as long as it uses the English instrument, and it gives a flow of idea that you can easily translate in your own terms. For example, if you also love the famous movie “The Titanic”, you will know what the story is all about as you watch thoroughly. Whoever said you have to know English before you can understand such English movie? You see, even if you do not know, your interest will get you going, and unconsciously you are beginning to understand the story that goes with the language, and you will be able to gather the English words that you learn on your own.

IT is impossible to learn what you are ought to if you do not have the interest for it. It is impossible to store in your mind the stuff that you want nothing to do about. The catch lies in your INTEREST. Put your interest in the line.

<img src="http://i44.servimg.com/u/f44/11/74/66/71/gramma11.jpg" alt="How to effectively learn English grammar" title="How to effectively learn English grammar" / style="float:left;margin:3px"/>Learning grammar is one of the most difficult subjects in high school and college especially if English language is only your second language. However, you can find many professionals from non-English countries that are fluently speaking the English language because they learn very hard to perfect their English for many other good reasons, purposes and endeavors especially in business.

The following are basic guidelines how to effectively learn English grammar so that you would be guided properly.

       • Enroll in grammar school – This is the most basic step many professionals do so that they are assured of proper guidelines and learning on the subject. Grammar schools are usually private learning institutions that give enough emphasis in English. In fact, in these schools all the students are told to speak only on the English language as their first priority during school hours. The school has strict guidelines on this so that students caught speaking in other vernaculars in their classrooms are penalize. This means students would be forced to practice the language and eventually master the art in using English being considered the universal language. Though the tuition is really much higher that any other typical private institutions but the knowledge is also worth the career you are to practice in the future.

       • Make it a habit to learn grammar everyday – In order to increase your vocabulary about English you should be able to have at least a Thesaurus or other dictionary available. Thesaurus is easy to learn because every word or phrases you need to have has corresponding example how the world is used in making a complete sentence. This means you have good access to learning how to properly use the world according to rules and regulations. At least you must know 10 new words in the dictionary everybody and practice using them in a sentence. In this way, you would be able to familiarize how the words or group of words are used in sentences.

       • Listen to audio CDs – There are many available compact discs now in book stores near you that talk about proper English grammar, sentence constructions. This is also helpful because listening is better learning procedure rather just merely reading it. There are expert grammarians you can listen on these CDs and you would not only learn about grammar but the proper dictions as well how the words are being pronounced

Above all else, don’t lose hope! Remember grammar is a tricky thing to pick up, especially in conversation when you are trying to make yourself understood and you have next to no time to think of the rules and irregularities! Try one to one English classes as a means of polishing your skills - this way the teacher has more time to correct your particular mistakes rather than trying to deal with a whole class’ worth of them! No matter how you end up doing, remember that it’s the communication and the fact that you can get yourself understood that counts most with learning languages - being able to speak with perfect grammar doesn’t count for much when you have to pause after every other word to decide how you should conjugate the verb! And remember that you don’t even have to have a “real life” partner to speak to - you can find one online - look into chat rooms and “speak” there - you’ll soon see your quick-language-thinking improve! Be it a pokern room for practising German or a chat room dedicated to French cuisine, it’s a fun way to learn!

Although it’s a blessing for those who used English as their everyday language, mostly in America, Australia, and some places in Europe but still they need to learn how to deliver the language with the correct usage of grammar. Aside from learning the English language, you cannot easily communicate to others what you wanted to say to them or deliver your speech the correct way without knowing the right English grammar. During the first day of school usually in secondary level, students are already educated in Basic English subject. During the first day of school, it is necessary for the student to focus on the subject in order to have an improvement on how to use the language with the correct usage of grammar. It is important therefore using English with the correct grammar in order to have a better understanding in communication. English is also the principal language used in other subject such as Psychology, and any other methodical classes. In fact, most of the subject nowadays, uses English as their tool of communication to the students.

In Spain, a lot of citizens there especially the business people are willing to learn English. It is because they wanted to promote their fascinating country not only within their country’s boundary but to the whole world; since English is a universal language Spanish people are eager to learn the language. American appreciates those people who know how to entertain them through communicating using the English language. There is a possibility that they will invest a lot of business in your country if they can be assured that their investment will reign. Using English as a communication tool is one of the business’s technique to become famous and well-known throughout the world.

American and British people love to stay in Spain for vacation. In fact Spain is a famous country for tourists to gather during vacation. But most of the travelers in Spain are those English people who usually visit the place during their summer vacation. Spain has a vibrant environment as well as the type of weather they have. American people love to visit Spain because of its stunning landscapes and captivating views as well as adventurous places. Furthermore they love the great city atmospheres of Madrid and Barcelona (attractions such as the super clubs and the glamorous casinos with the juegos de casino)Therefore if you’re one of the Spanish tourist guides you must learn English language and know how to communicate them using the right grammar. It’s quite hard to learn English grammar but if you show your interest to learn, you will then eventually learn. In fact not all American and British are good in grammar, since there are few of them who don’t know how to use the right grammar even though English is their usual language. English people still definitely required to take English subject for their enhancement, considering that they can speak English but still their grammar is not that good.

<img src="http://i27.servimg.com/u/f27/11/74/66/71/englis11.jpg" alt="How Not to Have a Boring English Class" title="How Not to Have a Boring English Class" / style="float:left;margin:3px"/>WHETHER it’s TOEFL (Teaching of English as a Foreign Language) or IELTS (International English Language Testing), these two are similar. They usually take three academic semesters to accomplish broken down in three stages – basic, intermediate and advanced. In basic TOEFL or IELTS, students are urged to write daily essays and recite them in front. The essays become progressively long as the school days wear on. And this tends to be boring. So the following are some suggestions to innovate teaching TOEFL or IELTS in your own language school. This formula can certainly work both with adult and kid students whether you’re located in Spain, the French-speaking regions of Canada, Hong Kong, South Korea or Thailand.

Infusing movies through the usual lecture can be exciting at times. But do not just select random movies. Make sure to rent DVDs with subtitles so that the students can learn. And do not just play the movie and doze off. The movie must be value-laden, not some Van Wilder/National Lampoon/Jackass kind of adventure. Of course, comedy movies with values are okay. Students in India for example may be interested to compare the culture in Hollywood with their own Bollywood culture based in Mumbai.

Let’s say for instance that you have selected the movie The Longest Yard. The Longest Yard is one movie which can represent American culture because it’s not just the movie that is the selling point to complement teaching English language acquisition, there’s the stellar soundtrack of Nelly as well. Nelly’s single The Longest Yard is one of the most lovable tracks the rapper has produced. And while you’re at it, encourage the students to interpret what the rap-laden lyric of The Longest Yard means to them as an Indian citizen. In short, relate the plot of the movie and the song in local terms.

For the Spanish audience, you may want to rent all the Hollywood movies starring Penelope Cruz and view them to your class one by one as the semester goes on. Remember that this is only to complement the formal English lessons and not the other way around. The Spanish students can surely relate with Penelope Cruz because she has been known in movies here prior to migrating to Spain. For starters, let the students view her first Hollywood debut Woman on Top. Woman on Top is particularly significant in Cruz’s Hollywood debut because the title alone symbolizes her making big in the United States. Another thing with Woman on Top is introducing us to Brazilian mysticism. See, there’s a lot to learn from Hollywood movies aside from compounding our English. We see other cultures as well.

Where Woman on Top references Brazilian culture, Penelope Cruz’s next film All the Pretty Horses is all about two lovers (both horse whisperers) who elope to Mexico bringing with them the horses of their landlord but whom they have grown to love. With these two movies alone, your English students will surely learn something.

You could also think about bringing games into the class room - or to your home! Many foreign students learning English play online games to help interact with people who speak the target language so whether you are French with a flair for casino en ligne or German with a like for Tetris - think about it, it coudl really speed up the language learning process and you could make friends for life interacting!
